The jury is still out on native cultivars—native species altered by breeding and offered with a moniker after the species name, similar to Echinacea purpurea ‘Pink Double Delight’. Cultivars with illness resistance could be beneficial, and altering certain traits doesn’t seem to reduce back ecological benefits. But, say, altering leaves from green to purple makes them inedible to insects, and changing a flower’s type and colour can cut back its appeal to pollinators.
